Our Story

Aidan, raised in northwestern Wisconsin, always dreamed of living in Alaska and being self-sufficient. After graduating high school in 2018, he pursued this dream, working in the trades before settling in Wrangell St. Elias National Park.

Kenna is from the southern desert of Arizona, where she discovered that she doesn't like the heat, snakes, or scorpions. She traveled to McCarthy for a summer job and fell in love with Alaska.

Aidan and Kenna's paths converged unexpectedly in downtown McCarthy, where a unique encounter unfolded. Kenna was taken aback by the sight of Aidan skinning a beaver right in the heart of town. Despite her initial surprise, Aidan seized the opportunity to ask her out on a date. Kenna felt a strong connection and saw a future with the beaver skinner. Their first summer together was vibrant as they took spontaneous road trips and enjoyed outlaw country music. This common interest set the stage for a dream to thrive.

Their first winter in McCarthy marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Kenna and Aidan's decision to adopt Waylon, a spirited black lab boxer mix, infused their adventures with joy and companionship. At just 10 weeks old, Waylon was more than a pet; he became an integral part of their explorations.

With boundless energy, Waylon embraced every experience. He learned to navigate the rugged terrain of the mountains, relished car rides with the wind in his fur, and chased after the snow machine with unmatched enthusiasm.

Yet, it was Waylon's unwavering spirit that truly inspired them. He poured his heart and soul into every interaction, whether on a simple walk or providing emotional support during challenging times. In nature's embrace, he climbed mountains alongside them, reminding Kenna and Aidan the importance of wholeheartedly engaging with life.

When the couple took the courageous step of starting their kennel, it was only fitting to honor the dog who had taught them so much about love and dedication. They named it Waylon’s Way, a tribute to their beloved companion. Each dog they now train carries a piece of Waylon’s spirit, embodying the passion and commitment that Kenna and Aidan strive to instill, inspiring others to embrace their adventures with the same fervor and joy that Waylon displays each day.

Aidan and Kenna are diligently making their dreams come true by embracing the off-grid lifestyle and operating a thriving sled dog kennel. They have high hopes of starting to participate in exciting races within the next couple of years, as well as embarking on some truly remarkable expeditions in their stunning backyard: Wrangell St. Elias National Park.
