Frequently asked questions
Why Waylons WaY
Named after our first dog, Waylon, our kennel proudly embodies the values of resilience, companionship, and adventure, reflecting the spirit and energy that he brought into our lives. Each aspect of our operation is infused with these principles, which guide us in providing unforgettable experiences.
What should I wear?
Alaska's weather is notoriously unpredictable and can change rapidly throughout the day! Therefore, it is advisable to wear multiple layers that you can easily add or remove as the conditions shift. Additionally, bringing waterproof shoes, rain gear, and clothes that you don’t mind getting paw prints on are all highly recommended!
What should we Bring with us?
Camera: Bring a charged camera or smartphone to capture scenery and moments. Consider extra batteries.
Sunglasses: Keep your eyes protected from 24 hours of sun!
Water: Stay hydrated with a water bottle.
Snacks: High-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or jerky will help maintain energy.
Is this tour safe for kids?
Yes! This tour is not only great for kids but also ensures a memorable experience for the whole family. However, please remember that children must have a parent or guardian accompanying them throughout the entire adventure to ensure their safety and enjoyment.
Do tours get canceled for weather?
The safety of our dedicated team is our absolute #1 priority. Tours will be cancelled if the weather conditions become too hot for the dogs to safely run, as we prioritize their well-being above all else. Refunds are available if we end up cancelling due to weather.
Do I get to drive the dogs?
Nope! Our highly experienced mushers will be expertly driving the dogs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable adventure for everyone. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience while feeling free to ask questions at any point throughout the journey.
Where is Mccarthy?
McCarthy, AK, is located in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in south-central Alaska.
Where do the tours start?
Tours start on the edge of McCarthy near the McCarthy creek bridge. Additional information on pick up location will be provided after booking.
How long are the tours?
Our tours last about 3 to 4 hours. You will be picked up by a side-by-side and driven 9 miles down the scenic Nizina Road. After an introduction to the dogs, you can help harness them. The dogs will then pull you to the Nizina River in about 15 minutes, where you can enjoy the views while they cool off in the water. Then, the dogs will take you back, and you'll ride the UTV back to McCarthy Creek Bridge.
Why Do you only operate in the summer?
We live in McCarthy all year, but we don’t have visitors all year. The National Park has tough winter conditions, which makes tourists choose other places in the winter. Also, all the businesses shut down for winter, leaving McCarthy at a low population.
What is dryland mushing?/WHat is the point of the dogs pulling a motorized vehicle?
Dryland mushing is essentially the practice of mushing without the presence of snow. It is how we actually train in the fall to prepare our dogs for their winter miles. This approach also allows us to effectively work with and train our dogs regardless of the weather conditions. Moreover, it provides a unique opportunity to instill good manners in our canine companions, as we have access to a reliable braking system that proves to be significantly more dependable than those used on snow.
